Part 6.2 – Specular Size
Before You Begin
Have your work file open in Photoshop. Have your model open in AM.
Introduction
In this section we focus on the size which will increase with dry or rough areas and soft areas and will
be smaller in hard or smooth areas and wet areas.
- Delete the temporary 50% gray layer we placed
in the Spec Size layer set in the last section.
- Now open the wrinkle bump map SkinFrontSectionWrinklepBump.tga,
select all and paste this into Spec Size layer set. Rename the layer Spec Size Base. Close SkinFrontSectionWrinklepBump.tga.
- Duplicate Spec Size Base, move the duplicate to
the Diffuse layer set and rename this layer Diffuse Base. Hide the Diffuse layer set, well come
back to this later.
- Select the Spec Size Base and apply
G-Blur/Radius=3. Repeat with
Radius=6.
- Do Adjustments->Brightness/Contrast and set
the Contrast = -50.
- Duplicate the layer and call it Smooth and set
the Blend mode to Soft Light.
- Duplicate this layer and call it Darken and set
the Blend mode to Darken (Figure 6.2.1).

- That’s it!
Save, generate the map and test it (Figure 6.2.2).

Figure 6.2.2
- I’m pretty happy with mine though a screen test
is really needed to judge the specular maps. If you feel you need to make adjustments
create two Overlay areas above the Darken layer; one called Smaller which
you darken to reduce the size; one called Larger which you lighten to
increase the size.
